First Forest Point

Why this hike

If you want Petrified Forest’s densest petrified logs without the crowds, this primitive route delivers. First Forest Point is a lightly traveled out-and-back that dives off the rim by Jasper Forest Overlook, crosses badlands studded with brilliantly colored wood, then climbs to a mesa-top viewpoint. It’s a short adventure with a backcountry feel—and very little hand-holding.

The experience

The standard route is about 2.1 miles round trip, starting from the Jasper Forest Overlook parking lot. A faint path skirts the rim, drops into the basin, crosses a wash, and then climbs to First Forest Point for sweeping views over the historic “First Forest” (now commonly called Jasper Forest). Expect uneven footing—loose sand, dirt, and occasional mud after rain—and stretches with no obvious tread. The payoff is superb: logs wedged into eroding slopes, multi-colored jasper-rich trunks along ridges, and a panorama that shows how erosion is actively revealing this ancient forest.

Difficulty and navigation

Plan for a moderate effort with basic route-finding. The route is unmaintained and largely unmarked; many hikers find the navigation most confusing after the larger wash. A printed route description from the visitor center and a GPS track help a lot. This is best for hikers comfortable reading terrain and retracing steps if needed.

Know before you go

There’s no water, no shade, and no services on the route. Leave petrified wood where it lies—it’s illegal to collect. Sturdy footwear is a must, and this hike isn’t suitable for those seeking a manicured trail. No special permit is needed beyond the park entry fee ($20–$25 per vehicle).

Best time to hike

Spring and fall bring the friendliest temperatures and typically drier conditions. Avoid immediately after rain; the washes get slick and muddy. Summers are hot and exposed, and winter can be cold and windy on the mesa. For photos, early or late light brings out the color bands in the badlands and the reds in the jasper.

If you’re on the fence

If you prefer a signed, easy path, skip this and head to Crystal Forest instead. If you’re up for a primitive route with solitude and standout petrified wood, First Forest Point is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the park.
