Nizhoni Point

Nizhoni Point is a roadside overlook in the Painted Desert, about four miles from Petrified Forest's north entrance. The viewpoint sits beside its parking area and has a wayside exhibit; the National Park Service identifies the viewing area as accessible to mobility devices. It's an easy way to take in the badlands without adding a hike. If you've already stopped at several nearby overlooks, keep this one short: the geology is the clearest reason to pull in.

The view crosses the contact between the Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle Formation and the much younger Bidahochi Formation. The Chinle's colorful layers formed largely from river deposits more than 200 million years ago; the Bidahochi records a lake basin from roughly 4–8 million years ago. The boundary is an unconformity, a gap in the rock record that represents about 192 million missing years. That is a lot of Earth's history to lose between two layers you can see from one stop.

The red badlands below their darker cap are the visual story here. For a photo, include both the red slopes and the caprock in one frame so the contrast reads clearly. A few visitors have found this view less distinctive than other Painted Desert overlooks, so think of Nizhoni as a quick geology stop rather than a place to linger after you've seen several rim viewpoints.
