At just 1.0 mile roundtrip (0.5 each way), it strings together Tawa Point and Kachina Point/Painted Desert Inn with uninterrupted vistas of banded badlands in reds, purples, pinks, and creams. If you’re entering from the north, it’s an ideal first stop—arguably the best short intro to the Painted Desert.
Route and logistics
You can start at either Tawa Point or Kachina Point (by the Painted Desert Inn); there’s parking and signage at both ends. Hike it as an out‑and‑back or use two vehicles and shuttle it one‑way. Many visitors link it with the Tawa Trail from the Painted Desert Visitor Center to make a longer, car‑free ramble. Expect about 30–60 minutes, more if you linger at overlooks or the historic inn.
Scenery and geology
The path traces the edge of a mesa with drop‑away views the whole way—think red badlands, crenulated white tuff (volcanic ash), and layered hills stretching to the horizon. You’re walking on the younger Bidahochi Formation (about 5–8 million years old) while looking into the much older Chinle Formation (around 220 million years), with a dramatic 200‑million‑year unconformity between them. Keep an eye out for petrified wood scattered in the desert below, and use the interpretive signs to decode the colors and rock stories. At Kachina Point, step into the Painted Desert Inn for exhibits on local history and culture.
Best time to hike
Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temps. Summer is hot and the trail is fully exposed—bring water, sun protection, and take advantage of morning or late‑afternoon light, when colors pop for photography. It’s a popular route; go early or late to sidestep the heaviest midday crowds. Note that area operations commonly run 8 AM–5 PM; plan your walk within those hours.
Know before you go
The tread is unpaved dirt/gravel with waterbars—easy walking but not truly ADA accessible. The rim can be windy, and the badlands drop off steeply just beyond the path. Stay on the established trail, keep kids close, and expect zero shade. Leashed pets are allowed.
