Painted Desert Visitor Center

Painted Desert Visitor Center is a visitor-center building within the historic Painted Desert Community Complex, beside the park’s north entrance at I-40 exit 311. Give it a short stop if midcentury architecture or park history interests you: the complex is built around a central plaza, with a signed loop and trail access nearby. The stop is about the campus architecture, history, and easy walking.

The short signed loop introduces points of interest around the complex, and interpretive plants fill the historic plaza. Tawa Trail also starts here. The National Park Service doesn’t publish the loop’s distance, so treat it as a quick leg stretch rather than a timed hike.

Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander designed the 23-building complex in 1958 as the park’s headquarters. Construction began in 1961, and the buildings were dedicated in October 1963. It was planned as a self-contained community with offices, maintenance facilities, visitor and resident services, and employee housing.

The community was one of the National Park Service’s most ambitious Mission 66 visitor centers, part of a nationwide effort to prepare parks for rising visits before 1966, the agency’s 50th anniversary. Its focal point is a central plaza inspired by traditional Southwestern pueblos. For a photo, frame several buildings from the plaza to show the full campus.

A restaurant, gift shop, gas station, public restrooms, picnic pavilion, and dog park make this a practical pause near the park’s north entrance. The Painted Desert Inn is a separate historic stop at Kachina Point, two miles north.
