Overview
Pintado Point sits at the highest elevation along the Painted Desert rim, delivering sweeping, near-360-degree views across a sea of multi-hued badlands. The name means “painted” in Spanish, and from here you really get the full palette.
What You’ll See
Expect expansive vistas of layered reds, purples, and grays, with landmark peaks and buttes punctuating the horizon. On clear days you can pick out Pilot Rock, The Pinnacles, the Hopi Buttes, and even the distant San Francisco Peaks. Look closely and you’ll spot a flat-bottomed volcanic crater (a maar vent) carved into the landscape by erosion.
Geology in View
This is a front-row seat to the Chinle Formation’s color show, capped in places by lava flows tied to the younger Bidahochi Formation. The visible maar vent is a remnant of explosive volcanic activity—an uncommon feature you can appreciate from a roadside overlook.
