#4 of 16 sights in Plitvice Lakes
Sight · Plitvice Lakes National Park
Climb for a bird's-eye look over Prošćansko and the Upper Lakes.
Overview
Tomićevo Pogledalo is a purpose-built lookout high above Plitvice’s Upper Lakes. From the platform, Prošćansko Lake lies beyond a sweep of wooded basins. I’d make room for it if the big lake panorama is part of why you’re walking this side of the park; this is an uphill visit, not a roadside pullout.

Guide
The park includes the viewpoint on its K programme from Entrance 1 and K2 from Entrance 2. Those are full-day lake routes of about 16.5 km and 17.5 km, respectively, usually described as six to eight hours. The park estimates about 20 minutes for the uphill climb to the viewpoint. After heavy rain the path can get muddy, so shoes with grip are a good idea. If heights make you uneasy, this high outlook may not be your favorite stop.
The platform stands at 684.82 m and looks across the Upper Lakes, with a bird’s-eye view of Prošćansko, the park’s second-largest lake. The surrounding wooded ridges make the lakes read as a chain of basins rather than one big sheet of water. For a photo, keep some of the slope and branches in the foreground; they help show the height of the view.
The viewpoint opened on April 12, 2024, and was named for Croatian writer and translator Josip Eugen Tomić. The park says he often came to this spot looking for inspiration for his poems. It’s a newer platform with a name rooted in the place’s older literary connection.
Plitvice’s waterfalls spill over tufa barriers, built as mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate with help from algae, mosses and plants. The active barriers continue to grow and alter the lakes and cascades. The park estimates active tufa barriers are about 6,000 to 7,000 years old, so this panorama is a view of a landscape that is still being made.
