Guide
Šupljara Cave is a 68 m natural passage in the Lower Lakes canyon, near Kaluđerovac Lake. It links two levels of the canyon walk, so the visit feels different from staying on the lakeside path. If stairs suit you and you want a closer look at the park’s karst, this is a worthwhile side trip; if not, the lakes and waterfalls are enough.
You reach the cave on foot by climbing narrow stairs that can be damp. The entrance is not wheelchair accessible. The passage is short, but the climb is the part to consider before you set off.
Inside, three halls connect through a spacious corridor. Look for the knobby cave formations and a stalagnate column, where a stalactite and stalagmite have joined.
The cave began when the floor of a sinkhole gave way; that floor had also been the roof of a cave below. Water shaped the wider karst landscape over long spans through its carbonate rock. In 1964, Šupljara and two other caves in the Lower Lakes and Korana canyon were declared geomorphological monuments of nature.
The through-route brings you back to the canyon’s upper path, where visitors describe a view over the Lower Lakes. For a photo with context, include the canyon beyond the cave opening rather than framing only the dark interior.
