Food and parking

Visitor parking is available at Entrance 1 and is paid on exit. Just outside that entrance, Buffet Slap serves drinks, cold savory food, and simple warm dishes. It’s a useful stop before or after the walk, not a café at the waterfall itself.

Veliki Slap, or Great Waterfall, is a single plunge over a limestone cliff at the downstream end of the Lower Lakes. It’s one of the park’s headline stops, and worth making time for if you want both a view from above and a close look at the falls. The photo viewpoints get busy; early or later in the day gives you a better chance to linger.

Start from Entrance 1Entrance 1 is the nearest entry.

Entrance 1 is the nearest entry. The upper overlook gives you the broad canyon view first; the marked route then descends toward the base, continues beside the Lower Lakes, and climbs back up the canyon’s east side. Expect a downhill walk followed by an uphill return. If you’re buying an admission ticket, select Entrance 1: the park validates tickets at the entrance chosen at purchase.

The water changes the sceneFlow depends on rainfall.

Flow depends on rainfall. Visitors have reported a fuller fall after spring rain and thinner streams in August or dry years. In winter, much of the cliff can freeze into a curtain of ice. The Lower Lakes usually remain open then, but weather can change which routes are accessible.

Its own stream, not another lake spillMost of the park’s cascades form where one lake spills into the next.

Most of the park’s cascades form where one lake spills into the next. Veliki Slap is different: the Plitvica stream approaches from the west and feeds this main drop. Nearby Sastavci is where the lake water joins the Plitvica to form the source of the Korana River.

The Lower Lakes sit in a limestone canyon, and Plitvice’s tufa barriers are still growing and eroding. Calcium carbonate settles out of the water, with mosses, algae, and bacteria helping build the porous rock. The falls and lakes are part of a living landscape that keeps changing shape.
