Mill Creek Day Use Area is the starting point for a self-guided walk through forest and stream restoration in the Mill Creek watershed, within Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. The road-based outing is about 2.4 miles round trip and shows how the former timber landscape is being restored.

The restoration walkFrom the parking area, walk up to the stop sign.

From the parking area, walk up to the stop sign. Old Rellim Redwood Company mill buildings are visible in the distance but are off limits. Continue along Hamilton Road to compare dense control plots with brighter stands thinned from 800 or more trees per acre to 75 or 150. At the fork about 1.2 miles in, turn right onto Rock Creek Road; a bridge over East Fork Mill Creek is about 100 yards farther. Logs placed in the creek create more varied habitat for coho salmon and other aquatic life.

California acquired the 25,000-acre Mill Creek Watershed Addition in 2002, after intensive timber management from 1954 to 2000. Restoration work is intended to move young replanted stands toward mature forest structure. The walk offers a close look at that larger project without entering the closed mill buildings.
