More about Prairie Creek Visitor Center

Start with a little contextPrairie Creek Visitor Center is a compact, historic 1930s cabin at the south end of Newton B.

Prairie Creek Visitor Center is a compact, historic 1930s cabin at the south end of Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, in the redwood forest beside Elk Prairie. Inside are exhibits on redwood ecology and the Civilian Conservation Corps, park information, a Junior Ranger program and a small bookstore. Stop before a walk if you want a ranger’s advice or a quick orientation to the trails.

The West Ridge and James Irvine trailheads begin here, making the center a useful starting point for longer forest hikes. The accessible Revelation Trail begins about 500 yards south, off the campground-side road. You can keep this a short information stop or pair it with a walk beneath the redwoods.

The CCC’s cabinCCC Company 1903 camped at Boyes Prairie, now Elk Prairie, in the 1930s.

CCC Company 1903 camped at Boyes Prairie, now Elk Prairie, in the 1930s. This cabin began as a concession and recreation building, built with rustic materials salvaged during cleanup of the prairie. CCC crews also built trails, campground and picnic facilities here, so the center is part of the work that shaped the surrounding park.

Between meadow and redwoodsThe center sits between open Elk Prairie and tall trees.

The center sits between open Elk Prairie and tall trees. Roosevelt elk graze in the meadow and visitors often spot them nearby or along the drive, though sightings are never certain. The quick change from open grass to shaded forest is a good preview of the walks that start here.

Set up your stopThe site has parking, flush restrooms, drinking water and picnic tables.

The site has parking, flush restrooms, drinking water and picnic tables. The building entrance has both steps and a ramp. RV and trailer parking is 100–400 feet from the building, so larger vehicles may need to leave more room for the walk. The park store sells books, maps and gifts; plan meals elsewhere. Center hours shift by season, so check the current schedule. On busy days the parking area can fill, and visitors may need to park farther along the parkway.

Frame the cabinThe low cabin and its porch sit under the redwood canopy.

The low cabin and its porch sit under the redwood canopy. Step back far enough to include the roofline and surrounding trunks; a tight shot of the dark siding loses the forest setting that makes this building distinctive.
