Bear Lake Road Park and Ride: Leave the Car Here“The Park and Ride on Bear Lake Road is coming up, across from Glacier Basin Campground. When the seasonal shuttles are running, I'd use this to reach Bear Lake or Glacier Gorge without hunting for another parking space.”

Trail guide
This is a 4.6-mile out-and-back from East Portal Trailhead to Sprague Lake, usually about three hours with a stop at the shore. The route uses the public Wind River and Glacier Creek footpath corridor; the same mapped corridor is walked back to East Portal. Expect rocky, sandy switchbacks early, then a gentler stretch through aspen and denser forest. Around 500 feet of cumulative climbing at this elevation makes it a moderate hike, not a lakeside stroll. The separate 0.7-mile Sprague Lake shoreline loop is an optional extra and is not included in the 4.6 miles.
The path begins near Wind River, then climbs the hillside in rough switchbacks. A break in the trees opens toward Estes Cone before the grade eases through an aspen grove. At the Glacier Basin junction, follow the direction for Sprague Lake. The way continues through thicker pines, past Boulder Brook, and down to the lake. The initial climb is the part to take slowly; poles can help on the loose, rocky descent back.
Benches along the shore face Flattop Mountain and Hallett Peak, and calm water can reflect the surrounding peaks. Spring brings songbird calls, and summer is a good season to look for wildlife; sightings are never guaranteed. If you want to walk the whole shoreline, add the separate 0.7-mile loop around the lake. Restrooms and picnic tables are beside the lake’s paved parking area; there is no food or potable-water service on the East Portal approach.
Park in the asphalt area at the east edge of the loop at the end of Highway 66; do not park in the Day Use Picnic Area. Bring your own water and food. Pets are prohibited on park trails, including this route.
