Cub Lake Trail

Cub Lake Trail is a 4.6-mile out-and-back from Cub Lake Trailhead through Moraine Park meadow and aspen to a high-country lake, with about 540 feet of gain. Allow 3 to 4 hours with a stop at the water. The park lists 2.3 miles each way; other guides measure the same return hike at about 4.8 to 4.9 miles. This mapped line follows the direct trail to the lake and returns the same way. Continuing beyond Cub Lake leads toward The Pool and Fern Lake, a longer outing.

A short bridge crosses the Big Thompson near the start, then the trail skirts the meadow's west edge. At about half a mile, turn right at the South Lateral Moraine junction and follow Cub Creek valley. Beaver Ponds lie nearby on the left; they are not the turnaround. The first roughly 1.9 miles are relatively gentle, with open valley views and occasional elk in the meadow.

The grade steepens near the end, climbing over rocky tread through aspen. Expect this stretch to take longer than the open valley walk. Burned and fallen trees are more noticeable near the lake, and deadfall limits the places where you can reach the shoreline.

In summer, lily pads spread across much of Cub Lake. From an open spot at the shore, look west toward Stones Peak. Moose and elk are sometimes seen along the approach or near the lake, but sightings are never predictable. The accessible edge is small, so plan on a brief stop rather than a long lakeside break; frame the lily pads with Stones Peak if the view is clear.

Use the signed trailhead on Moraine Park Road; parking is limited. The seasonal Moraine Park Shuttle serves this stop. Pets are prohibited on park trails.
