Before you go

Best time to go

Upper Beaver Meadows Road is mostly dirt and runs 1.5 miles one way from the visitor center area. It typically closes to vehicles from mid-October through mid-May. During that closure, you can still walk in after parking along Highway 36, but this becomes a walk instead of an easy drive-up picnic.

Toilets and meadow access

Vault toilets are at the picnic area in summer; during the winter road closure, the closest restrooms are at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Each September and October, the meadows close to foot travel from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. for elk rut, which can affect a picnic even when the road is open to cars. The site is listed as accessible for visitors with mobility impairments, but the road is mostly dirt and some areas are uneven; the exact surface at the tables isn't described.

More about Upper Beaver Meadows Picnic Area

A picnic with the Divide in viewUpper Beaver Meadows Picnic Area is a roadside spot in an open meadow, about 1.

Upper Beaver Meadows Picnic Area is a roadside spot in an open meadow, about 1.5 miles from Beaver Meadows Visitor Center on the park's east side. It's a relaxed lunch stop with open grassland and the Continental Divide as its backdrop; I'd save it for a proper picnic break, not a cross-park detour. The area has 10 picnic tables and 6 fire grates. Portable charcoal or gas grills and wood-fuel camp stoves are allowed only alongside park-provided grates; fully extinguish charcoal and ash, then put it in a trash receptacle.
