Moraine Park Discovery Center

Moraine Park Discovery Center is a historic visitor center and natural-history museum on Bear Lake Road, in the northeast corner of Moraine Park. It makes a useful short stop if you want some context for the park before heading farther up the road: the exhibits are hands-on, the building is part of the story, and the upper floor looks over the meadow.

The center is about 1.5 miles from Beaver Meadows Entrance along Bear Lake Road. Parking can be limited; four accessible spaces serve the building, including one van space. An elevator reaches the second floor, and the restrooms have accessible stalls, running water and child-size changing tables. Services can be seasonal, so check the park’s current visitor-center information before making a special trip. In peak summer hours, Bear Lake Road may require a Timed Entry+ reservation; check the current entry rules.

Inside, the displays cover geology, glaciation, weather and climate, ecosystems, and human impact. The Rocky Mountain Conservancy nature store sells books, park games, T-shirts and other keepsakes. Store proceeds support education, interpretation, research and preservation in the park.

Go upstairs for a view west across Moraine Park and the Big Thompson River, with Longs Peak prominent in the broader setting. It’s a nice way to connect the exhibits to the landscape outside, and the elevator makes the second floor reachable without stairs.

Tourists were visiting Moraine Park by the 1870s. Imogene Greene MacPherson built Moraine Lodge as a cluster of rustic guest buildings between 1905 and 1923. After the park acquired the property from her estate in 1931, the Civilian Conservation Corps removed most of the lodge to restore a more natural setting. In 1936, the old Assembly Hall became an NPS museum.

The Corps also began building the nearby amphitheater in 1936, fitting it into a natural bowl with native plantings and stone-and-timber seating. It became one of the earliest fully realized examples of a naturalistic amphitheater design. The venue still hosts weddings and school programs; take a look at its curved seating and the way it opens toward Moraine Park.
