Overview
Vanover is a low‑key, scenic connector in Saguaro’s East District, threading through the “cactus forest” between Shantz Trail (west) and Kennedy Trail (east). It’s about 1.6 miles one way with minimal elevation change, so the challenge comes from sun and sand more than slope. Expect abundant saguaros, open desert, and wide views toward Tanque Verde Peak, Mica Mountain, Agua Caliente Hill, and Mt. Lemmon.
What the trail is like
The tread is classic Sonoran singletrack: mostly flat, gently rolling, and often sandy. You’ll cross Loma Verde Wash and Monument Wash; the sand here can slow your pace, especially in heat. Stone steps on the east side near Monument Wash help with short ups/downs—some hikers love them, shorter folks sometimes skirt beside them. Navigation is simple and well signed, with two closely spaced junctions where Vanover briefly uses Loma Verde Trail before continuing east. Equestrian use is allowed, so don’t be surprised by manure on the path.
Scenery and wildlife
This is saguaro country—towering cacti, desert shrubs, and big-sky vistas. Keep an eye out for Gila monsters in warmer months; give any wildlife plenty of space.
How people hike it
On its own, Vanover is a straightforward point‑to‑point stroll; most visitors fold it into easy loops. Two popular options: the Shantz–Vanover–Wildhorse Loop (~4.3 miles) for a slightly more varied feel, or the Shantz–Vanover–Loma Verde–Cholla–Cactus Forest loop (~5 miles) that stays very flat and mellow. Both keep the focus on desert scenery while adding mileage.
Best time to hike
December through April is prime—cooler temps, softer light, and occasional cactus blooms. In warm months, start at sunrise; the trail is largely exposed and heat ramps up fast. Late‑day outings can be lovely for sunset on the longer loop. Carry more water than you think you’ll need. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. A park entrance fee applies.
History
Vanover was formerly called the Wentworth Trail; its eastern end was realigned to meet Kennedy Trail after the park’s 2009 trails plan. You may notice remnants of old corridors near Monument Wash that are now closed.

Parking
Most hikers access Vanover via the Broadway Trailhead in the East District; expect a medium-sized lot and no restrooms reported—plan accordingly.
Caution
Intense sun and heat with little shade; sandy washes slow travel. Start early, carry ample water, and watch footing around stone steps.
