Overview
A mellow Sonoran Desert sampler in a quiet corner of Saguaro West, the Vertical Cliffs Trail is most often done as a loop (about 3.6–3.8 miles total, roughly 262–300 feet of gain) linking Vertical Cliffs → Abington → Veteran’s → Animal Wash. Plan on about 1 hour 20 minutes moving time, longer if you stop for photos or wildlife.
Route and scenery
From a small pullout on W Belmont Road, you’ll briefly follow a pipeline access road before turning onto singletrack. The namesake “vertical” rocky cliffs appear as you contour west, with classic views of towering saguaros, low desert hills, and broad sightlines toward the Catalina Mountains. Near the junction with Abington Trail, look for a historic Aermotor windmill turning in the wash—a fun, unexpected photo stop.
Terrain and experience
Footing alternates between firm, rocky singletrack and loose, sandy wash. The Animal Wash segment is the love-it-or-leave-it part—long, deep sand that many hikers find tedious. If you want to skip it, make Vertical Cliffs an out-and-back or use signed connectors to shorten the sandy portion. Junctions are signed with metal posts, but signage is just “average,” so an offline map helps.
Wildlife and solitude
Crowds are typically light here, especially early. Keep an eye out for deer, rabbits, ground squirrels, lizards, and birds. Javelina sightings happen, and rattlesnakes live here—give them space.
Best time to hike
October through May is prime. Start early for cooler temps, softer light on the cliffs, and better wildlife chances. This is full desert exposure—avoid the heat of the day outside winter. The area is open sunrise to sunset.
Tips and logistics
- Sturdy footwear helps on rocky tread and prolonged sand.
- Carry plenty of water year-round and bring a downloaded route/map; some connectors aren’t on every park map.
- Parking is very limited (about 4–6 vehicles) at the gated pipeline road on W Belmont—don’t block the gate. No restrooms here. This corner is within the park fee area even though access is via a neighborhood road.
- No pets are allowed on this trail.

Parking
Small pullout by the gated pipeline road on W Belmont Road; space for ~4–6 cars. Park in front of the gate without blocking it. No restrooms; within the park fee area.
Caution
Full sun exposure and heat; carry ample water. Expect a long sandy wash if you do the full loop. Rattlesnakes are present. Signage is average—bring an offline map.
