Rip Rap Overlook

Overview

A classic Skyline Drive pullout, Rip Rap Overlook delivers a big, west-facing panorama from about 2,920 feet. On clear days you can pick out Waynesboro in the valley and even the Alleghenies on the far horizon. It’s an easy, rewarding stop if you’re road-tripping the park.

What You'll See

Expect broad, layered ridgelines rolling into the Shenandoah Valley. The scene really opens up here—perfect for wide shots and a few quiet minutes just soaking in the view.

A Bit of Context

You’re in the Riprap/Wildcat Ridge area, a hub for some of the park’s standout hikes. The Appalachian Trail runs nearby, and the view lines up with Wildcat Ridge, where a Civilian Conservation Corps fire tower once stood in the 1930s.

Nearby Hikes (Don’t Start From the Overlook)

If you’re heading for Chimney Rock, Calvary Rocks, or the Riprap–Wildcat Ridge circuit, use the designated parking areas: Riprap Parking Area around mile 90 or Wildcat Ridge Parking at mile 92.1. The overlook itself is just for the view, not a formal trailhead.

Logistics

This is a straightforward pullout with a small parking area and no amenities (no restrooms, water, or tables). It’s best for a quick stop unless you’re continuing to the nearby trailhead parking for a longer hike.

Best Time to Visit

Late afternoon into sunset is the sweet spot—the overlook faces west, so the light gets better by the hour. Weekdays see fewer cars than weekends, and on hazy or foggy days you’ll lose those long-range Allegheny views.
