Little Mo Nature Trail

Overview

Short, sweet, and easy: this loop delivers a lot in a little package. The full loop is about 1.1 miles total with roughly 65 feet of elevation gain and typically takes 20–30 minutes. It’s an easy stroll that starts on pavement and, if you choose, continues on a traditional dirt footpath for a more natural feel.

Route Highlights

Begin from Juniper Campground in the park’s North Unit. Pick up the interpretive pamphlet at the trailhead—numbered markers along the way match the guide and add context to what you’re seeing. The first ~0.7 miles form a flat, paved loop that winds through shady woods and reaches a viewpoint with a sweeping look at the Little Missouri River. Continue onto the dirt/grass footpath to leave the woods and wander through more open badlands-style terrain before looping back toward the campground.

What You’ll See

Expect a mix of river-bottom woodland, open badlands formations, and classic Little Missouri River views. Birding can be excellent—keep an eye out for colorful songbirds flitting in the riparian corridor. Large wildlife sometimes grazes near the trail; give them ample space and time to move off. The dirt section can feel more “wild,” including brushy spots and a chance of encountering snakes, so watch your step.

Accessibility and Trail Surface

The paved portion (about 0.7 miles) is the most accessible segment: generally flat, at least 3 feet wide, and stroller-friendly. Beyond that, the surface shifts to dirt and grass, typically 2–5 feet wide, with mostly gentle grades but a few steeper spots. For wheels or anyone wanting the smoothest footing, stick with the paved loop; the extended footpath isn’t suitable for strollers or mobility devices without all-terrain/adaptive equipment.

Conditions, Crowds, and Amenities

Hikers frequently report easy walking, nice river and badlands views, and low crowds. Expect a few brushy stretches on the unpaved side and occasional bugs. Bathrooms have been noted near the campground. Parking is at the Juniper Campground lot; from there, you may need to travel briefly along the roadway to reach the trailhead.

Best Time to Hike

This loop works most of the year, but late spring can be especially lively for bird activity. For the best light and cooler temps, aim for morning or late afternoon. Midday is fine given the short distance, but the scenery pops more when the sun is low.

Tips

• Grab the pamphlet at the start and follow the numbered posts—it turns a quick walk into a fun, informative tour.
• If you’re wearing shorts or have little kids in tow and want to avoid brush, enjoy the paved loop and skip the dirt extension.
• Give wildlife space. If bison are on or near the trail, wait them out.
• From the campground lot, wear bright clothing and be alert when sharing the roadway to the trailhead.
