About Hafragilsfoss

Hafragilsfoss drops about 27 m into the sheer-sided Hafragil Gorge, a dramatic section of the larger Jökulsárgljúfur canyon carved by the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It sits roughly 1.5 km downstream (north) of Dettifoss. The falls are broad (about 90–91 m) and thunder into a raw basalt amphitheater—big views, big sound, and far fewer people than nearby headliners.

Tips for visiting Hafragilsfoss

Choose east for the quickest overview; go west for a more rugged feel.
If the west 4WD spur looks rough, park before it and walk the spur.
Drive Road 864 slowly—potholes are frequent and conditions vary with weather.
Pack water and snacks and plan restroom stops at the Dettifoss car parks.
Fog and wind can move in quickly; bring layers and a lens cloth.

Best time to go

If you’re just after the vistas, the east overlook can be done in about 15 minutes in clear conditions. Give yourself longer on the west if you’re walking the spur or hiking closer from Dettifoss. Fog can roll in from the north and change visibility fast; wind and spray are common. Lighting is generally kinder early or late in the day; midday is harsher.

Facilities

Treat Hafragilsfoss as an undeveloped viewpoint. Plan water, snacks, and trash pack-out. Use the larger Dettifoss parking areas for facilities on either side of the canyon.

East side (Road 864): A quick drive-up overlook with multiple rim viewpoints and a very short walk for different angles. The gravel approach can be rough and potholed—take it slow. Views are sweeping and from above.
West side (Road 862): Paved to the general area, then a short, rough 4WD spur (you can also walk it) leads to a cliff-top viewpoint about 400 m away on foot. You’ll see deeper into the gorge and even a precarious natural arch—give cliff edges a very wide berth. For a closer, lower-angle feel, there’s a roughly 4.5 km round-trip hike from the West Dettifoss area toward shelves near Hafragilsfoss.
