Dettifoss–Selfoss Trail (West)

Overview

This quick west-side loop links two very different waterfalls on the glacial Jökulsá á Fjöllum: the roaring Dettifoss and the more graceful Selfoss. From the west parking area, expect a short, high-payoff outing with built viewpoints, easy navigation, and big drama. Total distance is roughly 2.5 km (about 1.5 miles) for the loop, typically taking around an hour of walking time.

Trail Experience

From the large west-side lot, it’s roughly 800 meters (mostly downhill) to the upper Dettifoss viewpoint. The waterfall’s power is front-and-center here—so much so that you may feel a rumble underfoot. Expect heavy spray on this side, which can soak you and your camera and make photos tricky. A steep path drops to the lower viewpoint for a closer, more dramatic angle before you follow signs along the river toward Selfoss.

The walk from Dettifoss to Selfoss is about 1 km on a mostly flat, rocky riverside path. From the west bank you’ll get close to part of Selfoss, but you won’t see its full horseshoe shape (that perspective is from the east). Return via the westerly path to complete the short loop back to the lot.

Best Time to Hike

Summer offers the easiest access and conditions on the west side. In mid‑winter, the paved access road here can close due to snowfall—particularly January through March—so plan accordingly.

Tips and Tricks

• Bring a waterproof layer and protect your camera gear—spray at Dettifoss is no joke on the west side.
• The west lot is paved, large, and set up for crowds, with bathrooms and straightforward access from Road 862 off Route 1.
• If your goal is the classic, wide view of Selfoss’ full curve, consider adding the east side to your day. If you’re short on time, this west loop still delivers the best close-up power at Dettifoss.

Geology and What You’re Seeing

The river here is glacial melt from Vatnajökull, which carved the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon you’re walking along. At Dettifoss, the river drops about 44 meters into the canyon, and the falls are actively eroding—retreating roughly half a meter each year. It’s widely cited as Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and on the west side you’ll feel exactly why.
