Hangandifoss

Expect a steady uphill on rocky/gravel tread, an easy stream hop or two, and sections that run near unprotected cliff edges. If heights aren’t your thing, the first major viewpoint is the sweet spot.

• Classic ridge viewpoint: About 3.9 km (round trip) with ~180 m of gain. Plan 1.5–2.5 hours. This gives you the archetypal composition with Hangandifoss in the frame and the canyon opening at your feet.
• Go farther: Up to ~5.8 km (round trip) and ~410 m of gain, 2–3 hours. Beyond the first overlook the trail steepens and footing gets looser, but you’ll score extra angles on Hangandifoss and glimpses deeper into the canyon, with outlet glaciers appearing on clear days.

This is a young glacial canyon sculpted over thousands of years by meltwater from the Öræfajökull/Vatnajökull system. The cold, often silty flow feeds both the river and the falls. The slopes are carpeted in fragile mosses and alpine plants; stay on the main path to protect them. Birdlife works the cliffs and thermals—keep distance and keep it quiet.

• Drones require special permission and are generally not allowed here, in part to protect the canyon’s birds.
• The path can be slick after rain; boots and trekking poles pay off.
• Some segments track close to drop-offs—mind your footing, especially beyond the first viewpoint.

From the main ridge, frame Hangandifoss in the foreground with the canyon sweeping beyond; continue a bit higher for layered perspectives and, on clear days, glacier backdrops. Avoid harsh midday sun if you can—contrast is much nicer early and late.

Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón are close by and pair perfectly with this hike if you’re chasing a greatest-hits South Coast day.
