Waterton Lakes Golf Course is an 18-hole public course beside the Waterton townsite, with open fairways set under the Rocky Mountain skyline. Keep it in mind if you want a substantial golf outing: allow about four to four and a half hours for a full round, with mountain views running through the game.
A few shots are blind, and tall fescue can hide a ball that drifts off line. The fairways may look open, but don't count on every miss being easy to find. Wind can shape a round here; when the forecast points to a blustery afternoon, an earlier tee time may be the easier bet.
The original nine holes opened on July 1, 1922. Stanley Thompson was later asked to advise on expansion and improvements, and the 18-hole course took shape in the 1930s. Its mountain setting and long local history are part of the appeal as much as the game itself.
