Cameron Falls

Cameron Falls is a waterfall on the western edge of Waterton village, where Cameron Creek drops through a rocky gorge. The footbridge and viewing area are steps from parking, so it is an easy, low-effort stop. Visitors who expect a towering or remote cascade may find it modest; the appeal is getting close to the water without a long walk.

Start at the footbridge for the closest view of the cascades and gorge, then use the paths on either side to climb to higher viewpoints over the falls and Cameron Creek above. The bridge can catch spray in spring and summer when the water is running strongly. If you have only a few minutes, the bridge gives you the main view; the uphill paths are for a different angle.

The exposed Precambrian bedrock at the falls is about 1.6 billion years old, the oldest exposed bedrock in the Alberta Rockies. That is an unusual slice of Waterton: roughly 95 percent of the park's bedrock is sedimentary. Parks Canada's geology guide points to fossil ripple marks and salt-crystal casts in those older seabed layers elsewhere in the park, a striking contrast with the ancient rock exposed beside the falls.

The falls are a year-round stop. Spring and summer can bring mist across the bridge, while the water may freeze in winter. From November through April, when most townsite facilities close, heated washrooms and running water are available at Cameron Falls.
