Overview

About Prince of Wales Hotel National Historic Site

Why stop

  • The bluff-top view brings the hotel, lake, town and mountains together.
  • The 1920s timber and chalet architecture still feels made for this setting.

Heads up

  • The seasonal opening and limited paid parking make a spontaneous visit harder to plan.
Prince of Wales Hotel is a large 1920s hotel perched on a bluff above Upper Waterton Lake and the Waterton townsite. Its steep green roof, timber balconies and mountain setting make it one of the park’s defining landmarks. Stop even if you’re not staying: the building and the view are worth a look on the drive. It’s a seasonal hotel, and parking is limited and paid.

Built in Swiss chalet style, the hotel has steep roof peaks, gables and balconies; inside, heavy timber framing continues the rustic national-park design. Canada recognizes the building as a National Historic Site for its architecture and its part in early park tourism.

The Great Northern Railway built the hotel in 1926–27 as the only Canadian stop in its chain of resort hotels, chalets and camps. It was meant to draw visitors into Glacier and Waterton. Early itineraries brought travelers across Glacier’s backcountry to the hotel, often by boat from Goat Haunt, before they continued south by bus into Montana. It’s named for Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII.

The bluff is exposed. During construction in December 1926, a wind estimated at 145 km/h shifted the hotel’s wings about 7.5 cm off their foundation. A later major gust moved the framed building again; builder Douglas Oland left it slightly out of plumb rather than risk damaging it by pulling it straight.

The Royal Stewart Dining Room and Windsor Lounge serve meals, and the hotel offers afternoon tea beside lake-view windows. Tea comes with sandwiches, tea and pastries, so plan it as a sit-down meal rather than a quick coffee stop. Princess Gifts and Café are also on site. The hotel and its food service are seasonal; check ahead about reservations and whether day visitors can access the service you want.

For the defining view, back away toward the lake or town so the full roofline sits above the water with the mountain skyline behind it. From across the lake, the photo also shows how high the hotel stands on its promontory.
