Launiupoko Beach Park is a 6.7-acre county park on Maui’s west coast just south of Lahaina. Its draw is the mix: a shady picnic lawn by the water, a small sandy pocket and rocky shore, and an ocean-fed wading pool enclosed by a natural rock breakwater.
The pool offers a more sheltered place to wade than the open shoreline, but the water is still connected to the ocean and conditions change. The rock barrier does not make it automatically safe; check local conditions before entering and keep close watch on children.
Surfers, bodyboarders and paddleboarders use the open breaks, but the bottom is rocky or coral-covered rather than a smooth sandy entry. Whether the waves suit a new surfer depends on conditions, so don’t assume an easy beginner beach. From shore, look across the water toward Lānaʻi; near sunset, frame the breakwater or a shade tree with the surf beyond.
