Overview

About Honolua Bay Access Trail

Why go

  • A shady forest approach beneath striking hanging roots and vines.
  • Quick access to Honolua Bay’s rocky shore.

Heads up

  • The walk is short and the shore is rocky, not sandy.
  • Roadside access and the precise entrance are described inconsistently.
Honolua Bay Access Trail is a short out-and-back from Honoapiʻilani Highway through dense, shaded forest to Honolua Bay’s boulder-lined shore. The mapped walk is about 0.38 mile each way, or 0.76 mile round trip, and takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes on foot; time by the water is extra. Visitor estimates also give 0.6 mile round trip, and nearby roadside entrances are described differently, so expect some variation. Choose it for the forest and bay, not a long hike or a sandy beach.

“You’re approaching the forest path to Honolua Bay, a good stop for reef life rather than a sandy beach. Allow twenty to thirty minutes for the walk there and back, with extra time by the water.”

Hiking Honolua Bay Access Trail

Stay on the established pathThe roadside access is near mile marker 32.5.

The roadside access is near mile marker 32.5. The path winds beneath large trees, hanging roots and vines. Most of the tread is dirt, with uneven, rocky patches that can be slippery after rain. The land manager and exact public entrance are not clearly identified in official trail listings; guides also report private parcels and unmarked graves beside the route. Follow the established path and posted access instructions.

What you reachThe walk ends at a rocky shore, not a broad sandy beach.

The walk ends at a rocky shore, not a broad sandy beach. Across the bay, Molokaʻi gives the view a clear horizon. From the rocks, include a few boulders in the foreground to show the scale of the cove. The inshore water near the boat ramp can be murky from silt carried by Honolua Stream; visibility may be better farther out or to either side, but it varies. High surf is common in winter, so stay out of the water then.

Honolua’s reputation as a surf break grew in the 1970s. A 1975 feature called the bay “Paradise Lost,” a name that helped draw wider attention to this stretch of coast. That story belongs to the bay at the end of the walk; the forest approach is its own small pleasure.
