Overview

Tucked in Yellowstone’s quiet northeast corner, Pebble Creek Campground is a small, rustic spot with big-mountain scenery and the soothing sound of water. With just 27 sites and plenty of shade, it feels low-key compared to the park’s busier campgrounds. It sits near the mouth of Pebble Creek Canyon with the Absaroka Mountains framing the backdrop, and it’s only about 9 miles west of the Northeast Entrance—handy for quick runs to Silver Gate/Cooke City when you need supplies.

Setting & Wildlife

This is Lamar Valley country—come for bison and stay for bears, moose, and even the chance of wolves at dawn and dusk. Round Prairie, just south of the campground, is a classic wide-open viewing area. Creekside sites are especially peaceful; you’ll fall asleep to flowing water and wake up to mountain light.

Facilities & Sites (when open)

It’s intentionally simple: vault toilets, seasonal potable water via hand pumps, picnic tables, fire rings, and bear boxes. No hookups, no dump station, and no generators, which keeps the vibe quiet. A few sites are tent-only (including some walk-in), and smaller rigs fit best; some sites and driveways are tight. Example site specs show back-in, gravel pads around 25 feet long.

Current Status

Pebble Creek is closed for the 2025 season (ongoing recovery from 2022 flood damage that destroyed the water system and impacted several sites and roads). Expect a multi-year timeline; always confirm current status before planning.

When operating, summer is the window—think June through September—with chilly nights thanks to ~6,900 feet of elevation. For wildlife and photography, sunrise and sunset are golden in Lamar Valley; mornings bring the calmest air and best light. Weekdays are typically quieter, but this small campground fills quickly in peak season.

Getting a Site & On-the-Ground Tips

• If first‑come, first‑served returns, arrive very early (lines can form by 6:30–7:00 AM in peak months). If reservations are used, book the moment your window opens.
• Pack for real cold—even June can hit the 30s at night.
• No cell service here; download maps and messages ahead of time. The nearest coverage is usually toward Silver Gate/Cooke City or west near Slough Creek road.
• Keep a spotless camp and use the bear boxes; wildlife wanders right through this corridor.
