Parking

There is no parking at Mirror Lake Trailhead. Take the Valleywide or East Valley shuttle to stop #17; Curry Village is the nearest parking area.

Safety

Do not leave the trail to cross Tenaya Creek between bridges; water can deepen quickly and sweep hikers into whitewater. Snow and ice can persist on the south side in winter and early spring. In winter conditions, use the paved north-side out-and-back to the lake.

Mirror Lake Loop is a roughly five-mile circuit from Shuttle Stop #17 into Tenaya Canyon and around Mirror Lake. The first mile follows a paved service road to the lake. The loop continues beside Tenaya Creek past the Snow Creek Trail junction, crosses two footbridges, then returns past the lake on the south side of the canyon. Allow two to three hours; the grade is modest, so distance and seasonal footing matter more than climbing. The park lists five miles, while a mapped route trace measures about 4.5, so treat five as a rounded planning distance.

The loop reaches more than the lake’s near shore: Tenaya Canyon opens around you, with Half Dome from its base, Mount Watkins, Washington Column and the creek corridor in view. Mirror Lake is a seasonal widening of Tenaya Creek. Snowmelt usually fills it in spring and early summer; by late summer it often thins into sandy flats and meadow. When the water is calm, the boulder and granite walls make the signature reflection. For a photo, include the boulder low in the frame; later in the season, use the open meadow with Half Dome behind it.

If you only want the lake, turn around at the end of the paved road: it is two miles round trip and about an hour. The full loop adds the canyon section beyond the lake. There is no parking at the trailhead; use the Valleywide or East Valley shuttle to stop #17, with Curry Village the nearest parking area. Drinking water is not available on the route. Vault toilets are about half a mile from the start and at the lake, with none farther along the loop. Leashed pets, bicycles and strollers are allowed only on the first paved mile; beyond that they are prohibited.

Keep to the bridgesDo not try to shorten the loop by rock-hopping across Tenaya Creek.

Do not try to shorten the loop by rock-hopping across Tenaya Creek. A crossing that looks shallow can deepen quickly and sweep a person into whitewater; use the bridges and stay on the trail. In winter and early spring, snow and ice can linger on the south side after the north approach clears. When those conditions are present, the safer choice is the paved north-side walk to the lake and back.

The pool, sand and meadow are stages in the lake-to-meadow succession, and exhibits along the trail explain that change along with the area’s cultural history. The water is not a guaranteed feature of the walk: in a dry late summer, expect a creek and open basin rather than a mirror of water. The Half Dome and canyon views remain the reason to continue around the loop.
