About The Ahwahnee

Why stop

  • A 1920s landmark with distinctive public rooms, woodwork and valley views.

Heads up

  • Dining can be expensive, and visitor reports on food and service are mixed.
The Ahwahnee is a historic hotel in Yosemite Valley, known as much for its architecture and public rooms as for its lodging. Its mix of stone, timber, rustic details and Art Deco touches makes the interior worth a look even if you are staying elsewhere. Visitors can walk through public areas without booking a room, though access to particular spaces and services can vary.

The Dining Room is the main sit-down option, and dinner reservations are strongly recommended. The hotel also has a bar, coffee service, a Sweet Shop for snacks and sweets, and a gift shop. Dinner has a dress requirement; afternoon tea and the outdoor pool are for hotel guests. Visitors praise the setting, but food and service reviews are mixed, so treat a meal as part of the hotel experience rather than a guaranteed highlight.

The original plan turns around a central tower and three wings: the lobby to the north, the Grand Lounge to the south, and the large Dining Room to the west. In the lounge, look up at the painted ceiling beams, chandeliers and tall windows. The Dining Room has high timber trusses and windows facing the valley. A nearby shuttle stop makes this an easy walk-in stop while exploring Yosemite Valley.

Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed the hotel, which opened in 1927 to draw affluent visitors to Yosemite. Much of its construction is concrete and granite textured and stained to resemble redwood. The Dining Room’s broad roof trusses were reinforced over concerns about winter snow load and earthquakes. During World War II, the U.S. Navy used the hotel as a convalescent hospital for wounded service members; it became a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

The rear porch or terrace looks toward Half Dome. If you can use that public space, put some of the hotel in the foreground and Half Dome beyond it; the building gives the view a sense of scale. The hotel sits on Ahwahnee Drive in Yosemite Valley and has designated accessible parking and wheelchair access listed for visitors.
