Overview

Stoneman Meadow is the calm, open heart of this side of the valley—an easy wander with big‑screen views. It sits between the Merced River and Curry Village, so it’s effortless to reach and just as easy to linger.

What You’ll See

From the boardwalk, you get a sweeping panorama of Half Dome, the Royal Arches, and North Dome, with Clouds Rest peeking over Half Dome. In spring, look for Staircase Falls threading through the trees above—it's seasonal and can fade late summer.

Access & Logistics

Walk over from Curry Village or hop the valley shuttle (stops #14 or #19). You can also park along Curry Village Drive or in the Curry Village lot and take a short stroll to the boardwalk. Lower and Upper Pines Campgrounds are close by.

Ecology & Restoration

Meadows are Yosemite’s biodiversity engines—home to deer, bears, countless birds, and a tapestry of plants that depend on healthy, slow‑moving water. In 2006, crews removed an old asphalt path that once split Stoneman Meadow; restoring natural water flow has improved its biology and the look and feel of the place.

Best Times to Visit

  • Sunset: prime time for alpenglow on Half Dome when the face lights up beautifully.
  • Spring: best chance to catch Staircase Falls running and the meadow at its greenest.
  • Night: on clear nights, the open sky makes this a pleasant stargazing spot.
  • For breathing room, come early morning or late evening.

Etiquette & Tips

Stay on the boardwalk and established paths to protect fragile soils and plants. Give wildlife space and never feed them. Remember, this is not an official picnic area—plan food and restroom stops elsewhere in the valley.

Pros

  • Wide‑open Half Dome, Royal Arches, and seasonal Staircase Falls views
  • Easy, relaxing boardwalk right through the meadow
  • Gorgeous Half Dome alpenglow at sunset

Cons

  • Sensitive habitat—stay on the boardwalk, no roaming off‑trail
  • Not a designated picnic area and limited facilities nearby

Tips

  • For sunset color on Half Dome, arrive early to claim a boardwalk spot.
  • Spring offers the best chance to see Staircase Falls flowing.
  • Use shuttle stops #14 or #19 if the Curry Village lot is full.
  • Stay on the boardwalk—after rain or in spring the soils are especially fragile.
  • Bring a headlamp if you plan to stargaze and walk back after dark.
