Mirror Lake

The easiest walk follows a paved road about a mile each way from the Mirror Lake trailhead stop. The final 1,000 feet climb at a noticeable grade, so leave time for the walk back. Two accessible spaces serve drivers with disability placards near the destination, and a pit toilet sits where the pavement ends. No drinking water or food service is identified at the lake, so bring what you need. Leashed dogs, strollers, and bicycles are allowed on the paved route, but not on the unpaved paths.

The pool usually appears in spring and early summer, but snowmelt varies from year to year. By late summer the shallow water may disappear into sand. A dry visit is still a walk through the creek corridor below steep granite, with willows and meadow opening around the basin; several visitors describe the dry lakebed as worthwhile in its own right.

For the mirror effect, arrive early while the water is still. Half Dome and Mount Watkins are the defining reflections. Late-day light can warm Half Dome, but that is a different goal from a glassy surface. Spring water can look shallow while running deep and fast, so stay out of the water and on the established path.

The paved route is the simple out-and-back. A longer loop of about five miles follows both sides of Tenaya Creek and crosses a wooden footbridge; the farther side is rougher and rockier than the paved approach. Choose the loop only if you want a longer walk and are comfortable with uneven ground.

Mirror Lake is one of Yosemite’s natural lakes gradually filling with sediment. The same process has turned other glacially scoured lakes into meadows, and the park’s geology guide identifies Mirror Lake as already nearly filled. Its seasonal shift from pool to exposed sand is part of that longer change, not a sign that the place has lost its appeal.
