This small, octagonal building is the Abbe Museum’s original trailside home, set among trees at Sieur de Monts Spring. It opened to visitors on August 14, 1928, when the park was still Lafayette National Park. The original site and the larger downtown Bar Harbor museum are two separate buildings.

How the Abbe beganDr.

Dr. Robert Abbe was a New York physician and summer resident of Bar Harbor who gathered archaeological objects from around Frenchman Bay. The museum opened after his death and was dedicated to him. In 1928, it became Maine’s first institution to sponsor archaeological research.

The seasonal building’s 2,000 square feet eventually became too small for the growing collections and indoor programs. The museum bought a former 1893 YMCA in downtown Bar Harbor in 1997; its expanded 17,000-square-foot museum opened there in 2001. The collections now document 12,000 years of Indigenous history in Maine, including Wabanaki history and living artistic traditions.

The museum sits within a wider historic area that includes the spring house, Wild Gardens of Acadia, Nature Center, Great Meadow Wetland, and memorial paths. A shared asphalt lot, public restrooms, and an Island Explorer stop serve the wider area. Those nearby facilities belong to the Sieur de Monts stop, not to this building alone.
