More about Compass Harbor and Oldfarm

A short history-and-coast walkOldfarm is the wooded site of George B.

Oldfarm is the wooded site of George B. Dorr's former family estate, reached on Compass Harbor Trail south of downtown Bar Harbor. The cottage is gone, but the path links its stone foundation and garden traces with the rocky shore of Compass Harbor and Dorr Point. Keep it on your list for a compact mix of Acadia history and coast; this isn't a furnished house tour. NPS describes the round trip as 0.8 mile on one page and roughly a mile on another, so plan on about a mile with time to stop.

The trail starts broad and relatively level beneath the trees, then gets rougher, with roots, rocks, a steeper stretch and about 20 large stone steps. Reaching out over the exposed shore can mean scrambling on uneven granite. Use the public entrance from Route 3; Old Farm Road is private.

The unmarked gravel lot is south of Bar Harbor on Route 3, just north of Schooner Road. NPS estimates room for about seven or eight vehicles, and the entrance is easy to miss. The gate marks a fire road, so leave it clear. There's one permanent introductory wayside at the lot; the free NPS Oldfarm video tour adds 11 short interpretive stops along the walk. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Look for the cottage foundation, stone steps that once led to the sea, the remains of a saltwater pool and garden, and apple trees. These traces belong to a designed family estate, not a working farm. The Dorr cottage was demolished in 1949, so the interest is in reading the grounds and shoreline together.

A home tied to Acadia's creationCharles F. Dorr bought the oceanfront farm in 1868.

Charles F. Dorr bought the oceanfront farm in 1868. The family returned in 1878 to build and landscape their Oldfarm residence. George B. Dorr lived here until 1944 and devoted much of his life and personal wealth to protecting the island. That work helped carry the area from a local land-preservation trust in 1903 to Sieur de Monts National Monument in 1916, Lafayette National Park in 1919, and Acadia National Park in 1929.

At the end, open granite looks across Compass Harbor and Frenchman Bay toward the Porcupine Islands; the shore also faces Ironbound Island. The coast is the photo payoff: keep the rough granite in the foreground and the wooded point and water behind it. Visitors also describe tide pools and a stony shore, though how much beach is exposed changes with the tide.
