Schooner Head Overlook is a roadside ocean pullout on Mount Desert Island’s east side: a paved parking loop with a sidewalk curving to an upper viewpoint. It works as a short pause on the coastal drive, but trees screen much of the open view from up top. A separate, steep path drops to the rocky shore; take that only if the rough footing suits you.
The upper viewpoint faces Schooner Head Peninsula, a wooded headland across the water. The tree cover cuts into the view, while the shore below gives you a closer look at the rocks and surf. For photos, include the rocky edge and water in the foreground with the wooded point beyond; that angle comes from the rougher shore path.
Anemone Cave lies along the shore below, but it isn’t the overlook. It was once promoted in park materials; maps and brochures stopped marking it around 1969–71 as concern grew about effects on marine life. The descent is short but steep over worn pavement, then uneven shore rocks. Tide and surf matter for the cave approach, so don’t mistake the paved viewpoint walk for an easy route to the cave.
