“You're approaching the access for Carroll Homestead, a small farmhouse with a surprisingly well-traveled family behind it. John and Rachel Carroll moved here in eighteen twenty-five.”

Hiking Carroll Homestead Interpretive Trail

Carroll Homestead Interpretive Trail is an easy out-and-back from the main parking lot to the farmhouse, about 0.06 mile round trip on the wooded path. The mapped corridor is about 150 feet one way; the distance includes walking back. Think of it as a brief history stop, not a substantial hike. Allow about 30 minutes for the path and grounds, and longer if a seasonal ranger tour is running.

Available distance figures are longer and don't explain whether they include the driveway, return, or time wandering around the grounds. This figure covers the wooded walk and its return; it leaves out the separate gravel drive to the closer accessible parking area.

Choose the wooded path or gravel accessFrom the main lot, take the path to the left through the woods.

From the main lot, take the path to the left through the woods. The alternate gravel drive reaches accessible parking nearer the house. Around the farmhouse, the grass is uneven. The entry has a metal ramp, but small raised thresholds and uneven floors remain inside. Ranger tours are seasonal; check the park calendar if you want to see the rooms. The grounds and outdoor exhibits are the visit when the house isn't open. Pets can use the trail on a leash no longer than six feet, but can't enter public buildings.

The Carroll family lived here for 92 years across three generations, mixing small-scale farming with paid masonry work. The last family left in 1917, as daily life outside town became harder; the property came to Acadia in 1982. The family called it Mountain House. The preserved farmhouse and field make the path worth taking if local history interests you.
