Acadia Mountain

Acadia Mountain is a 208 m (681 ft) granite peak on Mount Desert Island’s west side, above Echo Lake and close to Somes Sound. Its open ridge has two summit points, with views toward the sound, nearby islands, and the Atlantic. Go for a real, rocky summit hike and open coastal views; skip it if you need an easy path or broad access.

The trailhead is on Route 102, across the road from Echo Lake and its roadside parking lot. Cross the highway carefully. The Acadia Mountain route climbs through forest and then up steep, loose rock and ledges to the exposed ridge. Keep walking east along the ridge to visit both summit points. A longer outing links Acadia Mountain with neighboring St. Sauveur and reaches two peaks.

This is a demanding walk, with uneven footing and exposed granite. The longer two-peak route includes an iron rung. Wet granite gets slippery, so a dry day and shoes with good traction make the climb easier to manage. The route is not accessible. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet, but the park does not recommend bringing them on this steep, rocky route.

There is a small roadside lot, and visitors report that parking availability varies. The trailhead is across Route 102, so allow time to cross safely. A park entrance pass is required year-round. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead, but no accessible restroom.

The open summit gives you a broad look toward Somes Sound, with islands and the Atlantic beyond; Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains appear in wider views. For a photo, keep a strip of bare granite in the foreground with the water beyond it. That shows both the exposed summit and the coastal setting.

Mount Desert Island’s granite formed about 420 million years ago. Much later, glaciers polished the mountains and cut broad valleys across the island. On the summit, the bare slabs and rounded ridge make the bedrock easy to see against the forest below.

Acadia’s 117-mile trail network was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. This climb is one part of that larger built landscape of footpaths across Mount Desert Island.
