Seawall Picnic Area

Overview

Seawall Picnic Area is the low‑key, oceanfront picnic spot on the west side of the island—steps from the surf, across the road from Seawall Campground. If you want waves-in-your-ears dining without the crowds of the park’s busier hubs, this is your spot.

Why it’s special

You’re sitting beside a natural cobble-and-pebble "seawall"—a rocky, wave-washed shoreline with small coves, not a sandy beach. It’s one of the few places on this side of the island where you can park and immediately wander the rocks. Views sweep across the water (including toward Great Cranberry Island), and the soundtrack is constant surf.

What you’ll see

• Classic rocky coast: rounded stones, tide-washed ledges, and pocket coves perfect for exploring and photography.
• Birds galore: scan the southwest cove for rafts of Common Eider, plus Black Guillemot and Red-breasted Merganser. In summer, look for American Black Duck and Laughing Gulls; during fall migration, expect sandpipers like White-rumped, Semipalmated, and Least.

Amenities and setup

• Multiple picnic tables, many with ocean views; several sites have fire pits/fireplaces.
• Restrooms on-site; recent visitors report flush toilets with running water. (Facilities may close in the late season.)
• Dedicated parking right at the picnic area; the Island Explorer bus stops at the nearby Seawall Campground for a car-free option.
• Trash cans provided. No food service—bring your own.

Pair it with

Make a half-day of it by adding the nearby Wonderland or Ship Harbor trails—both are short coastal walks with their own parking, just down the road.

Good to know

The rocks can be slick (especially with seaweed) and footing is uneven—wear sturdy shoes and keep an eye on kids. The ocean breeze often runs cool even in summer, so bring a layer. This side of the island is generally quieter, but tables can go fast on summer weekends.

Best time to visit

• Morning and late afternoon for softer light and fewer people.
• Midday tends to be busier, especially in peak season.
• Birders: fall migration brings the most shorebird variety; scanning both the southwest and north coves is a smart routine.

Getting there

Located on Seawall Road at the shoreline across from Seawall Campground. Parking is at the picnic area itself; if roads are under repair or parking is tight, use the Island Explorer bus stop at the campground and walk over.
