Carroll Hut

Overview

Perched around 1108 m on the Kelly Range, Carroll Hut is a simple, well-sited DOC standard hut with 10 bunks and classic West Coast views. It’s more about location than luxury: mattresses, a nearby water source, and a basic toilet—no stove or heating. First come, first served; pay with Standard Hut Tickets or use a Backcountry Hut Pass.

Getting There & The Walk

Start from the Kellys Creek car park just off SH73 near Ōtira. The track climbs steeply through rooty, often slippery forest, marked with orange markers, and breaks the bushline to broad views over the Otira/Taramakau. Expect roughly 2–3 hours up with about 760 m of gain; the descent is still demanding. Above the bushline there’s no marked route—navigation matters.

At the Hut and Nearby

Inside you’ll find bunk platforms with mattresses and simple benches; outside, a stream provides water and there’s a long-drop toilet a short walk away. On a fine day, continue to the nearby tarns and rolling tops toward Kelly Saddle for bigger panoramas; these open areas are unmarked and conditions-dependent.

Safety Notes

Weather changes fast here. Only venture above the bushline in settled conditions and carry proper navigation. In winter, expect snow/ice and avalanche exposure; if snow is present you’ll need full alpine kit and skills. DOC also notes occasional theft at some Arthur’s Pass track ends—don’t leave valuables in your car and consider more public parking.

Wildlife

Weka often cruise the hut surrounds—curious, opportunistic, and quick to make off with anything left unattended.

History

The original 1938 Carroll Hut burned down; today’s hut opened in 1981 and was refurbished by DOC in 2004, including window upgrades.

Fees & How to Pay

Adults NZ$10/night; youth (5–17) NZ$5; under‑5s free. Use Standard Hut Tickets (honesty box at the hut) or a Backcountry Hut Pass for 12 months’ access to most Standard/Serviced huts.

Best Time to Visit

Go on a clear, settled day for views and safer tops travel. Summer offers long daylight and, for the hardy, a dip in the tarns; winter requires alpine skills and gear. Start early to make the most of visibility and give yourself plenty of time for the steep ascent and return.
