Carroll Hut

Carroll Hut is a standard 10-bunk backcountry hut on the Kelly Range, in an alpine basin just below Kelly Saddle at about 1,100 metres. This is an overnight destination or a demanding day hike, not a quick roadside stop. The route from Kellys Creek is about 5 km return with 760 metres of climbing; allow around six hours. It’s graded advanced, and the steep, rooted descent deserves as much care as the climb.

Start at the gravel parking area at Kellys Creek, about 3 km north of Ōtira on SH73. A creek crossing comes near the start and can be impassable after heavy rain. Dogs aren’t allowed on the track.

The hut has ten bunks with mattresses and a non-flush toilet. Water comes from a stream, so bring a way to treat it. There’s no fireplace; bring your own cooker and utensils, warm clothes and sleeping equipment. Check the current hut-ticket and booking instructions before planning an overnight.

Most of the route’s climbing comes early, through rātā and kāmahi forest, then subalpine scrub. The hut can stay out of sight until you’re close; the trees give way to tussock around the alpine basin. Weka sometimes rummage through unattended packs near the hut, so keep your food and gear close.

On a clear day, the saddle behind the hut opens a view down the Taramakau River toward the West Coast. It’s the best place to pause and look back over the basin; for a photo, let the tussock lead your eye toward the river valley. Tarns lie farther along the route toward Kelly Saddle.

Kellys Hill offers a Tasman Sea view, but that side trip is unmarked and for experienced alpine trampers in good visibility. There’s no marked track above the bushline, and snow, ice and avalanche paths can affect the route in winter.

The hut is named for Patrick Carroll, a young West Coast Alpine Club member who died in a mountaineering accident in 1938. Carroll Hut later became a base for skiing on the Kelly Range; a rope tow was installed in the 1950s before Temple Basin took over as the area’s ski field in the 1960s.

The first hut burned in 1980. A replacement went up on the same site the next year, and it was substantially overhauled in 2004.
