Ōtira Stagecoach Hotel

Ōtira Stagecoach Hotel is a working hotel with museum displays in the hamlet of Ōtira, about 16 km west of Arthur’s Pass village on SH73. Antiques fill the hotel, and stagecoaches and horse wagons stand outside. Stop if historic transport and eccentric collections are your thing; the objects are the draw, not a mountain walk or a grand viewpoint. The hotel’s history reaches back to the 1860s, when coach stops served travelers and mining communities on the West Coast route. Its own history dates construction to 1865 and links it to gold-mining growth. Later, the Ōtira rail tunnel opened in 1923, and the village grew around the railway workforce; at its peak, about 600 workers and their families lived here.

The old-fashioned feel carries through the rooms and shared spaces: the hotel has eight individually furnished rooms, period furniture and valve radios, alongside its antiques and memorabilia. Visitors also mention a piano or pianola, jukebox and pool table among the collection. It’s deliberately idiosyncratic rather than a tidy, numbered museum route, so give yourself time to notice the details.

There’s a café and licensed bar, with all-day breakfast listed as an option. Reports on food and service are mixed, so treat a meal as a useful extra to the historic collection rather than the main reason to make a special trip.
