Start at the gravel car park off SH 73 at Kellys Creek, about 3 km north of Otira.

Arthur's Pass National Park, CB · WC
A steep forest climb to an exposed summit and Tasman Sea views.
Overview
Kellys Hill is a 5-mile out-and-back from Kellys Creek, climbing steeply to Carroll Hut before continuing across exposed tops to the 1,394 m summit. The reward is a wide view west toward the Tasman Sea on a clear day. This is for experienced alpine trampers: the summit leg is unmarked, exposed and needs good visibility and confident navigation. Plan on about eight hours for the whole outing. DOC’s six-hour estimate covers the hut walk alone. If that is enough of a day, turn around at Carroll Hut instead.

Trail guide
The marked climb leaves the gravel car park, crosses Kellys Creek and follows orange markers through rātā and kāmahi forest, then subalpine scrub. At the hut, continue toward Kelly Saddle; the summit spur branches right before the tarns. DOC says there is no marked track above the bushline. One route account reports wooden poles, but they can be hard to spot from the saddle, so don't rely on them instead of a map, compass and good visibility. A communications installation sits on a nearby high point; Kellys Hill’s named summit is farther on.
The lower climb is steep, with roots and rock underfoot, some scrambling and one slippery gravelly step. Once the trees thin, views open over Kellys Creek and Arthur’s Pass. Carroll Hut sits on tussock grassland; from the saddle behind it, the Taramakau River runs west toward the coast. The summit spur adds another sustained climb on open alpine ground. On a clear day, look west for the Tasman Sea; tussock in the foreground gives the ridgelines some scale in a photo.
The creek crossing is right at the start and can be impassable after heavy rain. Above the bushline, cloud can make the unmarked route hard to follow, and the open tops are exposed to severe mountain weather. Check with Arthur’s Pass Visitor Centre staff before heading above the bushline, and leave the summit for a clear day. In winter, snow and ice can cover the route and avalanche paths cross it; that requires mountaineering equipment and avalanche-assessment skills. Dogs aren't allowed.
Carroll Hut is a standard 10-bunk hut with mattresses, a non-flush toilet and stream water; bookings aren't required. The hut-only return is 5 km and DOC estimates six hours, so it is a serious walk even without the summit detour. No food service was found at the hut or trailhead.
