Parking

Gravelled car park by Kellys Creek off SH73, about 3 km north of Otira; the track begins at Kellys Creek bridge.

Safety

The initial creek crossing may be impassable after heavy rain. Expect a steep, sometimes slippery climb and open tops with no continuous track; intermittent poles can disappear in poor visibility. Winter snow and unmarked avalanche paths make this a serious alpine route.

Kelly Range Tarns via Carroll Hut is a demanding out-and-back from Kellys Creek: about 10 km (6.2 mi) return with roughly 1,000 m of climbing. It follows the steep climb to Carroll Hut, crosses open tussock on Kelly Saddle to the main tarn group, then returns the same way. Allow around 8–9 hours. The hut approach alone is a substantial six-hour walk; continue onto the ridge only if you are comfortable navigating alpine ground in good visibility. The line shown for the upper section is a route overview through open country, not a continuously formed track.

The trail starts at Kellys Creek and crosses a side creek; heavy rain can make that crossing impossible. The climb is sustained and steep. Roots and rocks can be muddy or slippery under the forest canopy, then the route opens through scrub and tussock with small streams near the bushline. A waterfall marks this upper approach before Carroll Hut, which sits in a tussock basin below Kelly Saddle. The hut-only walk is about 5 km return with roughly 760 m of ascent, and makes a shorter but still strenuous day by itself. Follow the orange markers on the formed approach.

Crossing the open ridgeFrom the hut, climb over tussock toward Kelly Saddle and continue along the upper Kelly Range.

From the hut, climb over tussock toward Kelly Saddle and continue along the upper Kelly Range. Beyond the bushline there is no continuously formed walking track: poles are intermittent and can be difficult to find in cloud. The route passes the main tarn group and turns back at the access sign before the descent toward Seven Mile Creek. This hike does not include a summit roam, an informal loop around the tops or a drop into Taipo Valley. Keep the map as an overview and be ready to turn around if visibility closes in.

Views and the hutThe climb gives changing views back over Kellys Creek and the Otira valley.

The climb gives changing views back over Kellys Creek and the Otira valley. In clear weather the hut looks along the Taramakau toward the West Coast; higher up, the tarns sit beneath the Southern Alps and make the defining view of the walk. Carroll Hut is a standard 10-bunk hut with mattresses, a non-flush toilet and stream water, but no fireplace. There is no food service on the route; carry what you need for the day, or your own cooker and utensils if staying overnight.

The initial creek crossing can be unsafe after heavy rain, and wet roots make the lower climb more demanding. On the open tops, low cloud and snow make routefinding difficult; winter snow can cover the route and avalanche paths are unmarked. In winter this is an alpine trip requiring suitable equipment and avalanche assessment. Dogs are not permitted in the park.
