“The Temple Basin car park is coming up, below a club ski field that dates to nineteen twenty-nine. The ski area has rope tows and ungroomed slopes, and you reach it on foot up a steep, rocky track.”

More about Dobson Memorial

See it from the lookoutDobson Memorial is a 7.

Dobson Memorial is a 7.6 m stone-faced obelisk on a rocky knoll near the high point of Arthur’s Pass. The visitor view is from Arthur’s Pass summit lookout across SH73. Follow the Dobson Nature Walk from the Arthur’s Pass Walking Track and look across the road; DOC warns that walking on the highway is unsafe. This is a look-across stop, not a close approach. For a photo, keep the obelisk and the mountain ridge behind it in the same frame.

Make it part of a walkThe summit visit is part of the 6.

The summit visit is part of the 6.8 km return Arthur’s Pass Walking Track from the village, listed at about 2 hours 40 minutes and graded easy to intermediate. It is a longer outing for a short look at the memorial, so treat it as one stop along the walk. The track passes wetlands, alpine shrubland and old-growth mountain beech, with steep steps on either side of Bridal Veil Stream; Jacks Hut is a restored roadman’s cottage.

The surveyor in its nameArthur Dudley Dobson (1841–1934) was a surveyor.

Arthur Dudley Dobson (1841–1934) was a surveyor. The memorial’s inscription records 12 March 1864 as the date he discovered the pass, and the Department of Conservation credits him with giving Arthur’s Pass its modern name. It marks the European surveying history of the crossing.

A 1937 stone obeliskThe memorial was proposed after Dobson’s death.

The memorial was proposed after Dobson’s death. Architect Cecil Wood and structural engineer Robert Campbell designed the obelisk, built with a reinforced-concrete core faced in local stone. Former prime minister George Forbes unveiled it on 18 April 1937; a special train brought about 700 people from Christchurch for the ceremony.
