Surprise Corner: The Hotel View

Overview

About Surprise Corner

Why stop

  • Classic Fairmont Banff Springs view

Heads up

  • Small parking area can be hard to use
  • The platform does not show the full Bow Falls scene
Surprise Corner is a signed roadside viewpoint where Buffalo Street meets Tunnel Mountain Road. From its raised platform, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel rises above evergreen forest, with Sulphur Mountain and the Rockies behind it. It is a quick stop for Banff's famous hotel view; the platform is hotel-focused, so do not expect a full Bow Falls panorama from this angle.
Parkwolf’s verdictThe hotel view is the payoff

“Surprise Corner is coming up, a quick stop for the Banff Springs Hotel rising above the trees beneath Sulphur Mountain. Use the raised platform for that view; this isn't the place for a full look at Bow Falls.”

“…Loved the commentary as you drove thru. I’m sure the app can do more than I know but the tips were very helpful. I’m gonna use it when we go to Banff next month.”

Cross carefully to the viewing platform and frame the hotel above the trees with the mountain slopes behind it. Morning is a good bet for light on the hotel. The steep cliffs above Bow Falls are unstable and off-limits; stay on the trail and platform instead of following loose edges for a river view.

There is a small parking lot at the corner, and visitors often find it difficult to use when the area is busy; its exact capacity and fees are not established. From downtown, the Bow River trail is a walking approach, followed by stairs up to Buffalo Street. Longer local routes continue from the viewpoint: 3 km to Tunnel Mountain Road (about an hour, with 60 m of elevation change) or 4.6 km to Hoodoos Interpretive Trail (about 1.5 hours, also with 60 m of elevation change).

A view that became a Banff imageThe name describes the sudden hotel-and-mountain view from Buffalo Street.

The name describes the sudden hotel-and-mountain view from Buffalo Street. The composition has been familiar from Banff paintings and postcards since the late 1800s. Part of its appeal is the contrast between the grand hotel, the evergreen canopy and the high, snow-marked slopes behind it.
