What to expect

A mellow, forested riverside outing right by Banff Springs Hotel. The Spray River West section is 5.6 km (3.5 miles) one way from the Spray River bridge back to the West trailhead, with about 70 m gain and 105 m loss—gentle stuff. Most people pair West and East for a loop (~12 km total), crossing at the midpoint bridge. It’s scenic without being showy: shady spruce and pine, the river as constant company, and occasional peeks to surrounding peaks and the golf course.

Who will like it

If you want an easy, close-to-town trail that still feels like the woods, this is your move. It’s multi‑use—hikers, cyclists, skiers, and horseback riders share it—so it’s a great pick for mixed-ability groups and families. Expect fewer crowds than the in-town paths, especially on weekdays.

Route notes

Start just beyond the Fairmont Banff Springs. Do it as an out‑and‑back on the west bank (to the bridge and back), or better, make the loop by returning via the east bank. Wayfinding can get a little confusing near the golf course—stay right at forks to avoid wandering onto the course. The bridge at halfway makes a natural snack spot and turnaround.

Surfaces, seasons, and conditions

In summer the tread is packed dirt and gravel with occasional muddy or dusty stretches. In winter, this corridor is groomed for cross‑country: typically double trackset for classic with a separate flat lane for other users. Be aware that avalanche paths cross the river around 4.5–5 km from the trailhead—don’t linger in those zones during winter. Slides and rockfall debris can appear on the west side after storms; check the current Parks Canada trail conditions before committing to the full loop.

Nature and vibes

Keep an eye out for moose and deer along quieter stretches, plus plenty of bird life. The valley’s rugged limestone and dolomite peaks frame the river—a classic Rockies scene shaped by glaciation. It’s mostly shaded, which is lovely on hot days and cool on shoulder seasons.

Logistics and tips

  • Distance: 5.6 km (3.5 miles) one way on the West side; the loop via East is ~12 km total.
  • Parking: Small lot at the Spray River West trailhead beyond the hotel; it’s about a 2 km walk from downtown if you’d rather skip the car.
  • Facilities: None on the trail; amenities are at the hotel or in town. Dogs must be leashed. Carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Best time to go

  • Summer: Early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer bikes. Expect some mud after rain and dust when it’s dry.
  • Shoulder seasons: A sweet spot—quieter, cool temps, and good river flow.
  • Winter: Excellent for classic XC when grooming is fresh. Avoid stopping in signed avalanche runouts and confirm grooming/conditions the day you go.

If you want something similarly easy with more open mountain views, consider pairing this with the east bank for the full loop—same effort, more variety.

Pros

  • Groomed in winter with classic tracks and a separate multi-use lane
  • Bridge midpoint makes an easy turnaround or loop anchor close to town
  • Quieter than in-town paths despite starting by a major landmark

Cons

  • Navigation can be confusing near the golf course if you miss the right forks
  • West side can see slide debris and muddy sections after storms
  • Multi-use traffic means sharing with bikes and horses in peak times

Parking

Small lot at the Spray River West trailhead just beyond the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel; about a 2 km walk from downtown Banff.

Caution

In winter, avalanche paths cross the river around 4.5–5 km—don’t stop in these zones. Slide debris and wet/muddy sections can occur on the west side. This is bear country—carry spray and check Parks Canada conditions before you go.
