Trail guide
This is an out-and-back from Fish Creek to Boulder Pass and Ptarmigan Lake: 8.8 km (5.5 miles) each way, or 17.6 km (10.9 miles) round trip. The route climbs through forest and open larch meadows before reaching the high pass above the lake. Allow six to seven hours with stops. Do it for a full alpine day and the wide views, not for a quick lakeside wander.
The first 3.9 km are uphill on the Temple access road; vehicles can’t use it. After that, a narrower trail keeps climbing through conifers, including subalpine larch. The trees thin into open meadows, and Halfway Hut is a useful day-use shelter and natural pause point. At the Hidden Lake junction, keep right for Boulder Pass. The 2.6 km round-trip Hidden Lake detour is separate and isn’t part of this route.
The final stretch climbs steadily past the boulders that give the pass its name. From the pass, Ptarmigan Lake sits below you; the eastern view looks toward the front ranges, while Mount Victoria, Mount Temple and several of the Ten Peaks are visible to the west. Pikas often dart among the rocks, and the meadows have wildflowers. In autumn, the larches can turn gold and loons may call from the lake. At the west shore, keep some water in the foreground to show how the valley opens around it.
You retrace the same route, so save energy for the climb back out from the lake and the long descent to the parking lot. Fish Creek Parking Lot is at the end of Fish Creek Road by the Lake Louise ski area; parking is limited. Dogs are allowed on leash and under control. Backcountry campground stays require a reservation. Check current trail conditions before leaving: snow can linger at high elevation into summer and make route-finding harder. This is bear country, so carry bear spray and know how to use it.
