Deception Pass is about 2.5 km from Boulder Pass and roughly 2,485 m high. The north side drops steadily toward Skoki Valley, opening views of the surrounding peaks. Turn around at the pass for this hike. Continuing down toward Merlin Meadows is a separate, much longer route. For a shorter day, the separate Boulder Pass and Ptarmigan Lake outing turns around earlier at about 17.9 km round trip.

The final approach is exposed above treeline, with little shelter; poor visibility can make navigation difficult. Include some of the rocky saddle in a pass photo so the surrounding peaks have scale. Dogs are allowed in Banff but must stay on leash.
