Rockpile Loop is the short, stepped climb from the Consolation Lakes Trail junction to Moraine Lake’s classic view of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Plan on 0.7 km round trip and about 30 minutes, with about 35 m of climbing and descent. Despite the name, treat it as an out-and-back: climb to the viewpoints, then return the same way. I’d make time for it if you want the famous panorama without committing to a longer hike; the steps make it more than an easy stroll.

From the Moraine Lake arrival area, follow the Consolation Lakes Trail and turn right at its first junction. Stone steps and switchbacks climb the back of the rocky mound. It’s a short, fairly steep pitch, with most of the effort concentrated in that climb. The rough steps can be uneven, so take your time coming back down. The route is not wheelchair accessible.

The view opens over the turquoise lake toward the Valley of the Ten Peaks. There are several designated viewpoints around the top, so walk between them for different angles instead of climbing onto the rocks. This is the scene known as the “Twenty Dollar View”: it appeared on a former Canadian $20 bill. For a classic photo, keep the lake in front of the peaks and include a little of the rockpile at the edge of the frame.

Pikas have been reported around the rocks, and their sharp squeaks can be easier to hear than the animals are to spot. Stay on the path and don’t feed or approach wildlife. The viewpoint is extremely popular, especially at sunrise and through the morning; expect to share the upper area. If one spot is busy, try another designated viewpoint rather than scrambling for a clear view.
