Tramline Trail

Tramline Trail is a moderate point-to-point path from the Lake Louise village railway-station area to the lakeshore, following the former tram corridor. The park map lists 4.3 km (2.7 mi) one way, with 220 m of climbing and 30 m of descent, and estimates 2.5 hours for the out-and-back. The connected mapped line measures about 4.9 km one way, so expect some difference between the published figure and the route on the map. Retrace the same path if you parked in the village.

Start at the parking lot opposite the historic station and restaurant, then follow the shared-use route toward Lake Louise. Much of it runs through forest on dirt track, with a wooden footbridge over moving water as a memorable crossing. Bikes are allowed, so keep an ear out as you walk. This is a useful village-to-lake approach, not a summit hike; if you only want the lakeside walk, start from the lakeshore parking area instead.

From 1912 to 1930, arriving railway passengers rode a tram from the station to Chateau Lake Louise on a 3% railway grade. Tramline keeps that old connection legible on foot. Dogs are allowed on leash under the usual rule, but Parks Canada has prohibited them on this signed ski trail when it is snow-covered; check the current winter restriction before bringing a dog.
