Where the town came fromBoquillas began as a mining settlement in the 1890s.

Boquillas began as a mining settlement in the 1890s. The Puerto Rico mine worked the cliffs above town; when it closed before the end of World War I, many families left. Tourism later became the village’s main livelihood. A formal port opened in 2013 after informal crossings closed in 2002, restoring a route for Big Bend visitors to reach town.
