“You're nearing Cerro Castellan Exhibit, where a roadside panel helps you read the bands on the steep peak above Castolon. Match its marked picture to the mountain: gravel and clay lie between volcanic layers.”

More about Cerro Castellan Exhibit

A roadside view, not a summit hikeCerro Castellan Exhibit is a roadside geology stop and viewpoint on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive,…

Cerro Castellan Exhibit is a roadside geology stop and viewpoint on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, facing the steep, layered peak above Castolon. Stop for the interpretation of the mountain's volcanic layers and the view; this is the exhibit stop, not a route to the summit. It works well as a short pause on the scenic drive, especially if you like understanding the rocks behind the landscape.

Read the layersThe panel's marked image helps connect the actual peak to the bands on its slope.

The panel's marked image helps connect the actual peak to the bands on its slope. Cerro Castellan is built from lava flows and volcanic tuff, or hardened ash, with gravel and clay deposited between eruptions. Erosion leaves this resistant pile standing above the surrounding rock, giving the mountain its steep, conical profile.

A wider geological storyThe caprock is the same lava that forms the Chisos Mountains' South Rim.

The caprock is the same lava that forms the Chisos Mountains' South Rim. Ash layers at nearby Tuff Canyon are older than the stack here, a useful comparison if you are driving the same scenic road. Lower on Cerro Castellan, sparse desert scrub includes creosote and ocotillo; little vegetation grows on its sheer upper cliffs.

Make the stop workThe exhibit is 20.

The exhibit is 20.4 miles from the north end of Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, beside parking for autos and buses or RVs. The National Park Service lists the exhibit as wheelchair accessible. Read the panel, then look up and match its marked layers to the real peak. For a photo, include the interpretive pedestal in the foreground with Cerro Castellan behind it, as the two together identify this particular roadside stop.
